~ Happy Easter ~

It has been a while since I posted here. My last update was just after the PRTC track meet at the Ott Center in March. I mentioned getting sick the night before the meet, I think. Well, I got very sick! A cold turned chest cold with many days of hacking. It was pretty awful--I haven't had something like that in decades! I even saw my doctor, so you know it was bad :)  I had to take 10 days of antibiotics (which I hadn't taken since . . . my twenties maybe?) because whatever it was turned bacterial and was lodged in my chest.  I worked out some during those weeks, but it messed up my training plans.  Finally it cleared, however, and I got my energy back. I did a few track workouts solo at Ott and with Alison last 10 days or so of March into early April. I was trying to train for the meet I competed in yesterday--the Front Runners meet in NYC at the Armory. I wanted to run the 800 and 200, but the 200 was like 15 minutes after the 800, so I skipped that one. I won my age group in the 800 with a time of 2:20.24 (like a half second off my PR at the Ott meet, where I ran 2:19.77). I felt a bit unfocused yesterday, as I was having trouble visualizing my race because I wasn't sure who I would be racing with. They grouped us by similar times, so it was mixed gender and ages. It was a fairly crowded section, and I got boxed in a few times and had to fix it each time by stepping on the gas. That made me feel kind of lactic. So although I am proud of the race performance (because I had been sick and because of the mandatory maneuvering), I had hoped to run faster than my previous 800.  It's a very humbling and challenging race. Because there are no lanes, every race is very different from the one before. A lot more strategy/thinking is involved. Now that I am running 2:20/2:19 (which was my goal this indoor season), I am revamping my dreams and shooting for 2:15 or better. I will have to train harder and smarter to achieve this goal. But I love it all!

(Alison made me pose in front of this lol)

Yesterday I had the privilege to meet Mark Alexander--a member of the Front Runners team, who is currently the guy at the top in the 800 in my age group. He ran 2:11 (!) this season in the 800. It's a phenomenal time. He is also a strong 400 runner. Unfortunately, he injured his foot pretty badly and could not compete. I hope to race against him at Nationals, we will have to see. He is a really nice guy. I enjoyed chatting with him a lot.

I am going to copy and paste below my performance record from the World Masters Ranking Website for this indoor season:

I was able to reach a few goals this season:

I ran a pretty good 200;

I broke 2:20 in the 800;

I ran a slightly faster 400 at Nationals this year than I did indoors last year;

I tried a new event--the mile--and didn't totally suck at it;

I achieved All-American time standards for my age group in all four events I ran this season;

I ran a strong leg (under 60) for the 4x400 relay at the Millrose Games, and our team set a new meet record;

& I had a lot of fun all season.

Next up: the Outdoor Season 2026!  In two weeks and four days I will run in the Penn Relays with John, Bruce, and another teammate who lives in Miami--Jacques Lucien, who just aged up to M60, and who just ran a 58 something 400 himself! We will have an incredibly strong team. I am really excited--this will be the first Penn Relays for me.

Outdoor Nationals start on July 16 in Geneva, Ohio (near Cleveland). It will be harder to medal this year, as many fast younger guys are turning 60 and aging up to the 60-64 group. I love the challenge, though, of trying to get better and better!
