USATF New York Open and Masters Meet
Saturday was my first meet of the 2025 outdoor season. This is a pic I took of the track when I arrived at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island in NYC: it was a cold, rainy, and windy day!
I competed in the 200 meters and the 400 meters. The meet was not very well attended, and the weather kind of made it a bummer. It was my first 200 meter race since high school. They haven't even posted the times as of yet (kind of a disappointing meet overall in terms of logistics, etc.) I think my time in the 200 was low 28 (which, considering the weather and drenched track, is okay--though I think I can do better!) All of my competitors were older (62 up to 69), so there wasn't anyone there to push me (though the older guys are great sprinters, don't get me wrong!, and nice guys, too). After I finished the race, I was walking over to collect my (wet) stuff from the start line and they called for the 400! So the turnaround was like, I want to say, 15-20 minutes. I felt lactic as I set my blocks for the 400. There was one guy in an outside lane who was in his early fifties, and he won the heat. I don't know his time, but I'm guessing under 60. I think I ran a 1:02 or 1:03. Again, given the conditions and the tight turnaround, I guess it was OK. I did NOT feel any pain in my hammy or behind my knee where the Baker's cyst burst at Worlds--so I was pleased. The drive to and from the meet was long and traffic-filled (rain, wind, etc.) I don't think I'd ever make the journey again for this particular meet. But it was good to get my feet wet, literally and figuratively. Any and all conditions!
Last week's track workouts went like this: Tuesday the 10th--4 x 400 with 2 min rests: 1:25, 1:26, 1:24, 1:19. It was cold and rainy, too!
Wednesday I saw Josh for another great PT legs workout. Thursday I saw Geoffrey who really loosened up my legs! So I really only had the one track workout last week (plus Saturday's meet). Today I am supposed to do a 600 and 200 "time trial" that Alison and Lorraine did yesterday. Then we may meet Wednesday for another track workout. This coming Sunday is the International meet at Monmouth University. I am registered for the open 800 meters! The race is at 3:45 p.m.
