Moving toward the finish in the 800 meters

Had a great meet Saturday at the PRTC Indoor Classic at the Ott Center track. I was very surprised by my two performances because Friday night I was definitely coming down with something.  I didn't sleep well at all and early Saturday morning I was thinking of cancelling the meet. But, as it's just a 10 minute jog from home, I decided to go and see how I felt. I ran the 800 around 11:00 a.m. , I think, or 11:30? I was so lucky to have great competitors for that race! Rob Ciervo (57-year-old runner on my team) ran a nice race and basically paced us all to perfection. He came in at 2:22. I was able to have a kick left and I passed him on the last curve. But a 40-year-old runner out-kicked me--he won, BUT thanks to him, I got pushed and ran a PR--finally breaking 2:20: I ran 2:19.77. I was thrilled. It was a really fun race. My new time makes me 2nd in the U.S. for indoor times (second to the superstar Mark Alexander--who ran 2:11 this season!!!), and makes me 6th in the world.  I was shocked. A couple hours after the 800, I ran the 200 meters (one lap around--complete sprint). I came in second in my heat (lost to a 33 year old, who also pushed me!) This was my first ever indoor 200 (I ran one outdoors last June in NY, at 28.8). I ran 26.81 on Saturday. Again, I was shocked. I really didn't think I could run that fast (it's like the 7th best U.S. time this indoor season). It was really fun to go all out!

Team photographer Walter B got this shot of me in the 200

The thing I was catching on Friday totally caught me--I have been stuffed up and hacking for days. Had a great massage with Geoffrey yesterday, which really helped my tight legs and hips. I am just praying that I didn't get him sick!
